May 1--The economy posted strong gains in the first quarter, despite the impact of the bird flu and the violence in the South, according to the latest data from the Bank of Thailand.

But Nitaya Pibulratanagit, a senior director of the central bank's Monetary Group, said the violence in the South had begun to affect the tourism sector in March.

The number of tourist arrivals totalled 875,000 in March, declining from 899,000 in February and 1.09 million in January.

Still, March arrivals rose 2.4 percent from the same month last year, due mostly to low base effects. Tourism in the first half of 2003 was affected ...
