FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. _ Several witnesses described how a man and a woman climbed on board a large cargo ship off Miami Beach two years ago as federal prosecutors began Tuesday to build an unusual criminal case against the environmental group Greenpeace.
The trial this week in U.S. District Court in Miami is the result of the nation's first federal indictment against an advocacy group over its protest tactics.
Greenpeace is charged with planning and carrying out an unauthorized boarding of a ship approaching port under a rarely used 1872 law against what then was known as "sailor-mongering." The law originally was written to discourage brothels from luring sailors off ships.…
