Jun. 16--New consumer credit protections will help reduce identity theft and help victims recover, a top official with the Federal Trade Commission said Tuesday.
Howard Beales, the FTC's director of consumer protection, outlined for Congress a new National Fraud Alert System that consumers will be able to access Dec. 1 if they suspect they have been identity theft victims.
"The alert will put potential creditors on notice that they must proceed with caution when granting credit," Beales said in a written statement.
