Jun. 16--FTC RULING FAILS CONSUMERS: As a consumer, I was disappointed by the recent news that the Federal Trade Commission caved in to the three national credit bureaus to delay the start of free annual credit reports for consumers.
Instead of sometime this year, Texas consumers now must wait until June 1 next year to request free credit reports, according to a rule approved this month by the FTC.
In December, Congress passed a law -- the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act -- that ordered credit bureaus to issue free credit reports upon request from consumers once every 12 months.
Congress did this because credit reports have become an overwhelming factor in the well-being of all consumers.
Credit reports and their accuracy are vital whenever anyone obtains a mortgage, applies for a credit card or loans, buys insurance and even seeks employment.
The interest rates and insurance premiums people pay depend on their credit histories. Some companies check credit histories of job applicants as a factor in employment decisions.
