Norway's Norsk Hydro is promoting itself as a partner for Gazprom in development of the 3 trillion [m.sup.3] Shtokman gas field in the Barents Sea.
The two companies have agreed to set up a working group to negotiate Norsk Hydro's possible role, and whether it will be limited to upstream development or include downstream and marketing activities. At a meeting with Norsk Hydro last week, Gazprom chief executive Alexei Miller said the Norwegian company could be one of "the most important" partners in Shtokman as a result of its experience of offshore production and transportation of gas from offshore fields.
