The first wave of Growing Up in Australia, the longitudinal study of Australian children, was officially launched by Senator the Hon Kay Patterson, Minister for Family and Community Services, on Sunday 8 February 2004.

Despite the soaring temperatures, more than 100 people, including about 50 children, turned out to participate in the event on the Rooftop Garden at the Melbourne Museum in Carlton Gardens.
