Jun. 11--SAWMILLS, N.C. -- A series of chemical explosions at a plant Thursday shot a fireball and smoke more than 100 feet into the air, injuring three plant employees and forcing about 120 people to evacuate their homes and a nearby school.
It was the second chemical-related evacuation in Caldwell County in a week. On June 3, a chemical leak in downtown Lenoir temporarily forced about 500 people from their homes.
The explosions, at about 7:30a.m., affected fewer people, but only through fortunate timing. South Caldwell High School sits about a quarter-mile southeast of the company, STAT Inc., which transports and cleans up hazardous waste.
Only about 60 school employees and students, most of them football players lifting weights, were on campus, said schools spokeswoman Libby Brown. If school had been in session, as many as 1,500 students and 140 employees would have had to leave.
