Harold MacDonald spent most of his 34 years at Ford Motor Co. in product development. But he is remembered for roles that took him beyond the automaker's engineering studios.

MacDonald, who died May 26 at age 86, was Ford's lead witness in the 1979 criminal trial involving rear-end fires in the subcompact Ford Pinto.

Mike Davis, a retired technical information manager at Ford, recalls that MacDonald was disturbed by the allegations that his car product development organization overlooked safety and quality standards to boost profits.
