Spiking gas prices dampened Americans' economic hopes in early June, even though the fast-growing U.S. continues to add jobs at a fast clip.
The IBD/TIPP Economic Optimism Index fell 2 points to 52.8 in June, matching April's nine-month low. Over 50 means optimism; under 50 means pessimism.
"Americans' economic confidence is not as strong as one would expect, given the significant improvements made along the economic and job fronts," said Raghavan Mayur, president of TIPP, a unit of TechnoMetrica Market Intelligence, IBD's polling partner.
