Pleasure and pain at the pump
I'm happy to own the Toyota Prius, and as a retired locomotive engineer I'm fascinated by its smooth operation. My mileage runs from a 47-mpg low to 57 mpg. My license plate says "56 MPG.'' And my new favorite slogan: "SUVs Suck While Hybrids Sip.'' My last fill-up was seven gallons at $1.92 while at the next pump a woman was filling her Hummer with premium. Last I saw, her pump read $74 and counting.

Here we go again. Long-lost words from my youth return. Here are the words we welcome back: horsepower, rear-wheel drive, station wagon, V8 and Hemi. Here are words that should stay lost: gas shortage and gas lines.
At the last gas shortage I had a '76 Camaro that got 15 mpg at best, and I spent lots of time in gas lines. The car companies said they'd never let this happen again, that they were "on the case'' and in just a few years cars would be getting 50 mpg. Some three decades later, SUVs grow more enormous and Hummer H2s get barely a dozen miles per gallon. I test-drove one last month and the salesman said if you have to ask about gas mileage, you can't afford it.
