Jun. 5--Petrol prices could be increased as early as next week as part of a broader package aimed at minimising the impact of soaring global oil prices on the Thai economy.
Energy Ministry officials met with Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra yesterday to brief details of the package, which includes new conservation measures such as early closing times for petrol stations and turning off some street lights to save electricity.
Mr Thaksin said afterward that the government had no plans to float retail petrol or diesel prices.
"We have no plans to float prices. It would be too heavy a burden on consumers, and it is just not needed," he said.
But ministers will meet on Monday to discuss whether the current price caps should be increased. Since Jan 10, the government has capped pump prices, with current ceilings at 14.59 baht per litre for diesel and 17.59 baht per litre for 95 ...
