2004 JUN 11 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) has announced the formation of a new research group to reduce the risk of a severe and potentially deadly complication of the smallpox immunization.
The complication, called eczema vaccinatum (EV), occurs almost exclusively in people with a history of eczema, and can develop when people with eczema are given the smallpox vaccine or come into close personal contact with someone who has recently received the vaccine. According to NIAID, EV can kill up to 30% of children younger than two, and can kill between 1% and 6% of those adults affected.
NIAID said that the new research group, the Atopic Dermatitis and Vaccinia Network (ADVN), is comprised of three components: a clinical studies consortium, an animal studies consortium and data-coordinating center.
