Jun. 2--MAKING SUPPLY CHAINS WORK BETTER: In last week's article by Chris Catto-Smith of RSCS (Thailand), we discussed the six major root causes affecting costs across the supply chain. In this article, he continues and explains the process often used to improve supply chain cost performance. Unlike hurried "knee jerk" attempts at cost reduction, an effective process requires a deliberate, disciplined approach.
Step 1: As Is First is an analysis of how the supply chain currently works, how well it is performing, what costs are incurred and the levels of service achieved. Measuring how well a supply chain works can be undertaken using customer surveys, competitive data, benchmarking, internal audits, cost metrics and analysis of the company's process documentation and performance evaluation system.
