DENVER -- Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery results in weight loss that's virtually identical to that achieved with the open version of the procedure--but with significantly greater preservation of lean body mass and more fat loss, Dr. Robert T. Marema reported at the annual meeting of the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons.

This physiologically important advantage, reported now for the first time, may be a consequence of the shortened recovery period following laparoscopic gastric bypass, said Dr. Marema, medical director of U.S. Bariatric, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

"Open gastric bypass patients really struggle to get going after surgery," he said. …
