The COX-2 inhibitor celecoxib (Celebrex) could be a safer pain relief option for older people than other anti-inflammatory drugs, a Canadian study claims.
The study showed that the risk of hospitalisation for heart failure among people taking celecoxib was comparable to controls, whereas the risk for those using non-selective NSAIDs or another COX-2 inhibitor, rofecoxib (Vioxx), was higher.
The retrospective study assessed risk of hospital admission for heart failure in 14,500 people aged 66 years or older who had been using rofecoxib, 18,900 celecoxib users, 5,400 non-selective NSAID users, and 10,000 non-NSAID user controls.
