Jun. 2--A top Medicare official visited Charlotte Tuesday to convince seniors -- especially those who lack drug coverage -- that Medicare's new prescription drug discount cards aren't as confusing as they might seem.
The discount cards, which became effective Tuesday, are part of the largest Medicare benefits expansion since the health insurance program for seniors and the disabled was created in 1965.
The voluntary program, a temporary measure until a permanent drug benefit begins in 2006, began enrollment in May. In recent weeks, many seniors and consumer advocates have complained about the program's complexity. Seniors must choose from several dozen cards, which offer varying discounts on different drugs. Some cards are free, while others cost up to $30 annually. Savings range from 10 to 25 percent or more on many drugs, Medicare officials say.
