The Nasdaq composite closed just shy of its intraday high Tuesday to gain 0.2% on higher volume. The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 also advanced 0.2%. Internet content and service providers were among the top performing industry groups.
Sina jumped 3.74, or 10%, to 39.96 on triple normal trade, closing above its 50-day moving average for the first time in over a month. The Chinese Web portal scored triple-digit sales growth the past five quarters, though that's expected to slow the next four quarters. Among others in the Internet-Content group, Ask Jeeves rose 2.58 to 42.98, Travelzoo 0.50 to 23.06 and Yahoo 1.82 to a three-year high of 32.48, all on above-average volume.
United Natural Foods gained 1.38 to 26.67 on its biggest turnover this year, as more than 1.5 million shares changed hands. The natural foods distributor earned 22 cents a share in its fiscal third quarter, up 38% from last year and 2 cents above forecasts. It expects 74-77 cents a share for the full year, up from the 73-77 cents it saw earlier.
