Anheuser bids for China's Harbin

The No. 1 U.S. brewer launched a $720 mil bid for the Chinese brewer, topping rival SABMiller's hostile $550 mil offer. The two brewers are fighting for control of China's 4th-largest beer maker in the country's first takeover battle. The day before, Anheuser-Busch raised its stake to 36% of Harbin. Its offer values Harbin at 35 times the forecast for '04 profit, which some analysts say is too high. SABMiller bought about 30% of the brewery last year. Anheuser rose 17 cents to 53.44.

Coke still risks legal action by EU

The European Union refused to rule out legal action against Coca-Cola, despite talks aimed at resolving a 5-year-old probe into the soft drinks giant's program of offering rebates and rewards to retailers. The two sides are reportedly close to a deal and have exchanged draft texts that would avoid actions that could lead to fines against Coke, reported the Financial Times. Coke fell 0.5% to 51.07.
