Global chip sales rose 4% in April
Worldwide sales of semiconductors rose to $16.94 bil in traditionally strong April, their highest monthly level since July '00, thanks to strong cell phone demand, said the Semiconductor Industry Association. Sales were up 37% from a year ago. Chips for wireless rose 9%, flash memory devices climbed 3% and DRAM chip sales were up 10%. The SIA expects total '04 growth to exceed an earlier forecast of 19%.
** Offering an even more optimistic outlook, the industry group World Semiconductor Trade Statistics forecasted chip sales will rise 28.4% this year to $213 bil.
Nokia No. 1 in mobile computing
The Finnish cell phone firm is the world's leading mobile computer seller: its 28.2% market share rose 6.7% from the year-ago period while PalmOne's share dropped 9.2% to 16.8%. The total mobile computer market grew 41% to 5.93 mil units as smart-phone shipments doubled and handheld computer shipments were flat. Smart-phone sales were strongest in Europe and Asia, as 2 of every 3 mobile device sales.
** Sony will cease development and sales of handhelds for the U.S. in '04. Its withdrawal could hurt handheld software partner PalmSource. Sony will still roll out new models in Japan, where there's less competition. Sony fell 0.5% to 36.65; PalmSource fell 12% to 17.84.
