Searching for a competitive advantage, Mental Health Services Inc. has created a "fourth-generation" managed care system for mental health patients that has even attracted the area's largest health maintenance organization as a client.

By helping to guide treatment as soon as a patient seeks care, the 4-year-old Denver-based company now takes a different approach than its competitors to overseeing mental health treatment.

MHS staff spent the better part of last winter and spring interviewing potential customers, and used the information gathered from those interviews to refine its services.
