The S&P 500 lost less than 0.1% Friday, but closed the week up 2.6%. The Dow slipped just 0.2% and gained 2.2% for the week. Both indexes halted a four-week slide. NYSE volume fell sharply ahead of the Memorial Day holiday.
Consumer-related shares enjoyed brisk demand. Harman International Industries rose 2.34 to 80.14 on more than twice its typical volume. The stock has gained 170% since its breakout from a base in mid-April 2003. The audio components supplier recently undercut its 50-day moving average, but limited its decline to just 19.4%.
