A little zydeco music, please. What else would you play when you've just won a contract to supply pharmaceutical benefits to 200,000 people in Louisiana?
The toe-tapping is coming from the Rockville, Md., headquarters of pharmacy benefit manager HealthExtras Inc., which provides services to small and mid-size managed-care groups and employers.
It announced the Louisiana contract on May 13. It already had a contract for Nevada state employees.
The contract to supply the prescription drug needs of Louisiana's state workers and their families is the company's biggest ever, says analyst Josh Stewart of Sidoti & Co.
It also came at the expense of AdvancePCS, a much larger pharmacy benefit manager, or PBM, that merged with Caremark Rx in March. AdvancePCS previously had the Louisiana contract.
"It's pretty significant," Stewart said. "(HealthExtras feared) the big PBMs would move down into (its) market. It's surprising that HealthExtras is moving up into a bigger market."
