Allawi Nominated As Iraqi PM
1The Iraqi Governing Council chose one of its own, Iyad Allawi, a U.K.-educated secular Shiite and ex-exile, to head the transitional government taking power June 30. A top U.S. official also confirmed he's the choice. The news reportedly surprised U.N. envoy Lakhdar Brahimi, who will name leaders soon. U.N. officials said he "respects" the choice, but didn't actually endorse Allawi.
Al-Sadr Militiamen Fire On U.S.
2Gunmen opened fire on a U.S. patrol near the mosque stronghold of the radical cleric, raising fears over an Iraqi-brokered deal to end the standoff around the holy Shiite city of Najaf. Several militiamen were killed and 2 U.S. soldiers were wounded in Kufa, next to Najaf. The U.S. military said it's still hopeful the truce will hold.
Midwest Factory Growth Jumps
3The Chicago purchasers' index shot up 4.1 points in May to 68, the best growth in 16 years. Economists expected a small decline after other reports suggested manufacturing was cooling.
