2004 JUN 3 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Researchers report a new breast biopsy technique, combined image guidance (CIG) that uses a guide-wire placed under mammographic guidance.
"When mammography detects a nonpalpable lesion, the surgeons may be called upon to establish a diagnosis. Various techniques are currently employed," scientists in England report.
"We describe a technique, which can be used both for diagnostic and for therapeutic procedures. The technique essentially involves localizing the tip of a guide-wire, placed under mammographic guidance, with ultrasound scanning. This minimizes many of the problems encountered with wire-guided excision," wrote S.R.C. Benson and colleagues, New Cross Hospital, Royal Woverhampton NHS Trust.
