2004 JUN 3 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- A recent survey found that less than half of African-American parents with young children in Atlanta, Georgia, and Chicago, Illinois, were aware of the most common triggers of asthma, reported AstraZeneca.

The survey also found that fewer than 1 in 20 was aware that asthma is the number one cause of missed school days in children. Childhood asthma is 26% more prevalent in African-American children than Caucasians.

"It's of great concern that within the African-American community, parents are not recognizing the symptoms of asthma in their children, which can potentially lead to a life-threatening situation," said LeRoy M. Graham Jr., MD, FCCP, associate clinical professor of pediatrics at Morehouse School of Medicine and staff physician at Hughes Spalding Children's Hospital.

"In Atlanta alone, approximately 8,500 children suffer from pediatric asthma, showing the real need to get information into the community."
