2004 JUN 2 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- INCELL Corp., LLC, has been awarded a U.S. Air Force (USAF) contract to further develop its oral smallpox vaccine product and oral vaccine platform technology.
INCELL began developing its oral smallpox vaccine in January 2002 amid concerns over stockpiling and administering vaccines based on old technologies.
The ultimate goal is to develop a safe, orally delivered, unit dose vaccine that can be stored and shipped at room temperature, is developed from cost-effective manufacturing technologies, has recyclable packaging, and may be self-administered without needles, bandages, or other peripheral supplies.
The INCELL vaccine alternative follows the mid-April decision by Acambis (Cambridge, U.K.) to discontinue volunteer recruitment in clinical trials for its stockpiled ACAM2000 product due to unacceptable clinical side effects and safety concerns for the ACAM2000 vaccine and Wyeth's Dryvax vaccine, which have been implicated in heart problems, including chest pains and myopericarditis.
