But first, as the summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, approaches, American athletes are getting a stern warning before they back their bags. Athletes have been They are being warned not to wave the American flag during celebrations, due to fear of provoking hostility from anti-American sentiment.
Is it fair to expect athletes to show restraint when it comes to patriotism?
Joining us now from Los Angeles, former Olympian Bruce Jenner, and from Denver, sports columnist for the "Denver Post," Woody Paige. Good to have you both with us.
Bruce, let me begin with you. This idea of not flag waving, is that silly or what?
BRUCE JENNER, FORMER OLYMPIAN: I think it is a little bit silly. I think the most important thing is that our athletes represent our country with dignity.
Certainly putting the flag up in the year, I was in 19766, kind of starting that whole thing. Nobody had used the flag. This guy jumped out of the stands and hands me the flag, and I took the victory lap with the flag. And I was very proud at the time to raise the flag up in the air and, you know, signify the country.
COLMES: Other countries do it. Clearly, that's part of the Olympics. That's part of what it's all about.
Woody, where do you stand on all this?
WOODY PAIGE, "DENVER POST": Well, I remember when Bruce started that concept, and I think it made sense then and with the hockey team, when we had the miracle on ice.
But I was embarrassed, honestly, in Australia about four years ago when the four-man relay team not only took their shirts off, preened, paraded, pranced, held the flag and draped it over their shoulders. And I just thought it was lording over the entire world, and I don't think...
