Contrary to earlier preliminary reports, early treatment with AZT is beneficial to black and Hispanic people with HIV infection.

Poorer survival in these populations appears to be due to late initiation of antiretroviral therapy and less frequent use of PCP prophylaxis.

Harvard University researcher Stephen Lagakos and colleagues reanalyzed data collected during the NIAID ACTG 016 and 019 clinical trials of zidovudine (AZT) to determine whether the beneficial effects of the drug extended to black and Hispanic subjects.
