HIV may be a cofactor for the sexual transmission of hepatitis C virus (HCV), according to a study of the female sexual partners of men with hemophilia.
Penn State University researcher M.E. Eyster and colleagues tested for HCV and HIV antibodies in 234 women who were sexual partners of 231 multitransfused men with hemophilia seen at 10 hemophilia treatment centers.
Of the 194 women who were the sexual partners of men with HCV infection only, HCV seroprevalence was 2.6 percent. However, all of these cases of HCV transmission occurred among the 164 female sexual partners …
