After work, at around 10:30 p.m. on March 9, Bryan Rutherford of De Soto, Missouri, set off to visit a girlfriend in Lemay. As he pulled his truck into the parking lot of the apartment complex where she lived, a van began following him.

When Rutherford, 36, exited his truck, two of the three men in the van jumped out and confronted him. One brandished a handgun that was later determined to be a BB gun. The robbers took Rutherford's wallet and ordered him to get other items from his truck.
