RAYNAL: This Malibu was a pleasant surprise. I like the five-door hatch and the practicality it offers, even as I try not to be reminded of the old Citation. I hope for GM's case that this will be a better car, long term.
This is a much-improved Malibu over the car it replaces, and it would be easy to whack that sticker down some, as our tester was pretty loaded. The ride/handling mix is good, with a firm-but not too firm-ride. Build quality looks pretty good. The sliding rear seats are cool, and fold to give tons of cargo space.
So it's all good, but it's not all great. The 3.5-liter six doesn't have the smoothness of the sixes in Honda's Accord or Toyota's Camry, and the chassis isn't quite as buttoned up. What the Malibu does have going for it is its five-door body style, which the Honda and Toyota can't touch.
