Saving Imola
Ferrari will join the growing campaign to keep the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari at Imola on the Formula One calendar, according to its president Luca di Montezemolo. "Italy with only one Grand Prix is unthinkable,'' he told the Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper. "We are tied to Imola. We will defend it.'' F1 impresario Bernie Ecclestone said, "I never say never to anything, so let's see. It depends on a lot of things. Maybe we can get a bit of help, like getting tobacco branding there...''
All-star changes
NASCAR has once again modified the format of its annual Saturday night invitational race at Charlotte, now called the Nextel All-Star Challenge (7 p.m. May 22) instead of the Winston. While the 90-lap event will still be divided into 40, 30 and 20-lap heats, now no drivers will be eliminated at the end of each segment. "It's an all-star event and all the stars should participate,'' said Lowe's Speedway president Humpy Wheeler. "That's what the fans come to see, their favorite drivers.'' Also, all past event winners who are still active drivers will be seeded in the special event. With this change, 1998 winner Mark Martin and 1994 champion Geoff Bodine are eligible to compete for the $4 million purse, with $1 million award-ed to the winner. As in the past, Cup race winners from the last two seasons plus the winner of All-Star Challenge Open make up the rest of the field, with 23 drivers and car owners qualified so far.
