Diesel Phaeton U.S. bound?
Volkswagen may soon offer a 5.0-liter, 310-hp, 553 lb-ft twin-turbocharged V10 diesel in its top-of-the-line Phaeton sedan in the United States. The V10 is a Phaeton option in Europe and the big powerplant is available in limited numbers now in the United States in VW's Touareg SUV. Phaeton is sold here with two gasoline engines, a 335-hp, 4.2-liter V8 and a 420-hp, 6.0-liter W12. If VW decides to bring diesel Phaetons to the States, it will join the company's growing list of vehicles available with a diesel engine, including the New Beetle, Golf, Jetta and this spring, Passat. Diesels account annually for about 10 percent of VW's U.S. sales.
Maserati to VW?
All signs point to an eventual sale of Maserati to Volkswagen.
It's no secret that VW wants the Quattroporte platform for future Phaeton-size vehicles, nor that the 2006 Maserati Coupe and Spyder will have all-wheel drive and electronics on them from VW-owned Audi.
