Mayor Martin Chavez is proposing increases in funding for public works, the bus system, parks and animal shelters in his budget for the new fiscal year.

Overall, Chavez has proposed a $403.7 million budget for fiscal year 2005, a 13 percent increase compared with this year. Police, fire and corrections would see the largest increases, thanks largely to a 1/4-cent tax for public safety approved by voters in October.

The Public Works Department would also see a large increase, from $32.9 million to $38 million.
