NYSE stocks gained ground Monday, but in lower volume. The Dow and S&P 500 each rose 0.9%, the small-cap S&P 600 0.7%.
Aaron Rents continued last week's strong showing, climbing 1.08 to 30.04 in twice its normal trade. The furniture rental and rent-to-own chain said last week it expects 2004 revenue above $950 million. The firm posted 2003 sales of $767 million.
Wipro rose 2.55 to 45.60 as volume doubled. The provider of software engineering and IT services has benefited from the boom in Indian IT firms over the last few years. Monday's gain lifted the stock back above its 50-day moving average, to within 23% of its high.
NBTY advanced 1.75 to 38.91 on more than two times its usual turnover. The provider of vitamins, supplements and herbs sells its products in supermarkets, health food stores, pharmacies and through wholesalers. Sales growth has soared to 58% from 10% over the last four quarters.
