Byline: BRIAN MITCHELL
Republicans and Democrats are both hoping history will repeat itself in 2004. But will the Democratic Party lurch left and lose the presidential election to an incumbent Republican, as in 1972?
Or will a victorious commander in chief named George Bush fall victim to a charismatic Democratic governor, as in 1992?
The odds heading into the new year favor Howard Dean in the spring and President Bush in the fall. But no matter what happens in the White House race, Republicans look likely to keep hold of Congress.
Things will happen fast for Dean. Iowa Democrats will caucus Jan. 19, Martin Luther King Day.
The New Hampshire primary will come eight days later on Jan. 27.
A week later, Feb. 3, six states will hold primaries or caucuses -- Arizona, Delaware, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma and South Carolina.
