2003 got off to a rocky start for the tech industry. Fear of SARS chilled manufacturing in Asia. The imminent war in Iraq left investors and tech executives jittery. And businesses kept purse strings tight, putting off big tech projects.
But the picture brightened as the year wore on.
Tech spending picked up -- among consumers and businesses -- fueling stock market gains. By year-end, investors were mulling a new era of tech initial public offerings, with Google.com Inc. taking center stage.
The tech recovery isn't likely to bring back the excesses of the late 1990s. Tech jobs aren't growing like they used to, thanks in part to offshore outsourcing of labor and manufacturing. China, in fact, may be the big star of the next tech boom.
