2003 was no fairy tale for business. Indictments and scandals badly smudged some companies, U.S. troops remained in Iraq and consumer confidence didn't climb as much as expected.

But the end of 2003 brought encouragement. A three-year bear market went into hibernation, the Dow once again topped 10,000 and some businesses ramped up their efforts to prosper and stay honest at the same time.

Those leaders who kept their companies on top did so by maintaining integrity, high quality and vision.
