One news story dominated 2003: the war in Iraq. It was capped by Saddam Hussein's capture after nearly eight months on the lam. But there were lots of other events that, in a less newsworthy year, might have vied for the top spot: SARS, Bush's tax cut, California's recall. It was a tough year to winnow dozens of major news stories down to just 10. Here based on our own polls, readers' letters and discussions with our reporters and editors, is our list.
War In Iraq
1Saddam Hussein blustered, then lied about Iraq's weapons of mass destruction. Europe talked about making Iraq comply with sanctions, then hesitated. The U.S. warned Saddam. And, on March 20, it moved -- along with Britain and the 60 or so other nations who joined President Bush's coalition of the willing.
The ground and air campaign against Iraqi regular forces didn't take long. By April 7, Baghdad had fallen. By May 1, the war was over.
Sporadic fighting and acts of terror by the dwindling number of Saddam's loyalists continue to this day.
Saddam's Capture
