The Experience Of History

"The Benefits Of Marriage" (Letters, Thursday) nailed it as to the reason that the traditionally defined marriage is vital. Experience is the best teacher, and we have thousands of years of human experience in all cultures, races and eras that shows that the conventional nuclear family works better than other forms.

Other types of that institution have been tried, but all of them failed because they have no survival value for a viable culture or for the human species. The conventional marriage is not valuable simply because major religions support it; they support it because it is valuable.

Gene Stover, Reno, Nev.

A Universal Absolute

Although I have felt the desire to express my view to IBD on other issues (I teach in a public school), never have I felt a moral and mortal reason more compelling than the issue acted on by the court in Massachusetts, as noted in "Tea Party Time" (Editorial, Nov. 21).

Even though I have a degree in and teach the physical sciences, my knowledge of the judicial branch is that its role is to interpret law, not to suggest, much less mandate, specific laws be written.
