Stephen Zades says great businesses have lots in common with great paintings and symphonies.
The ad and marketing executive says the bond is creativity.
Zades says more managers should use their companies as creative palettes for dabbing innovative ideas. He believes this drives profits.
To make the point, Zades, who runs Odyssey Network, a strategy and brand consultancy in Winston-Salem, N.C., launched a program called Creative Odyssey in 1996. The program takes clients on an ultraoffbeat tour of New York City. They hunker down in hip-hop clubs, try on glittery platform shoes and visit trendy art galleries.
The idea is to jar and inspire the guys in pinstripes with new ideas about running companies and selling products.
Zades says sources of inspiration aren't limited to the arts. They also include psychology, religion and other fields
