Byline: PETER BENESH
At first it sounds like a mom and pop story. Harry Knowles is 75. He's still the chief executive and sparkplug of the company he founded in 1968.
Knowles' wife, Janet, is the company's administrative troubleshooter, still fixing problems -- sometimes before they arise.
"She knows where the skeletons are," Knowles said.
But it's no mom and pop story. You've likely encountered their company's products in any of thousands of supermarkets, department stores -- and mom and pop shops -- across the U.S. and overseas.
The company the Knowles built, Metrologic Instruments Inc., makes and sells scanning equipment that reads bar codes.
Sure, you say. Bar codes. Exciting, like the plastic tips on shoelaces.
