The Grinch won't steal Christmas this year, at least not online.
U.S. consumers spent $5.2 billion online from Nov. 1 through Thursday, a 22% jump from the year-earlier period, says BizRate.com, an online comparison-shopping service. Several other firms also report big November growth.
"There aren't a lot of industries growing at 22% in 2003," said Chuck Davis, BizRate.com's chief executive.
Earlier in November, a survey by the Business Software Alliance found that consumers might spend less online this year because of fears of credit card scams and identification theft.
But the fear factor is difficult to gauge.
A survey of 844 Internet users conducted last week by market tracker Nielsen/NetRatings found only 9% who were worried about providing credit card data online, says Rob Leathern, an analyst with that firm.
