Remember those metal braces that you had in the 1970s and 1980s?
If so, you probably remember food particles getting trapped behind the metal wires. Or metal brackets cutting the inside of your lips. And every few weeks, the orthodontist tightened the wires and your jaw ached for days.
Times have changed. Up to half of today's teens and adults with crooked teeth don't have to bother with braces. They can opt for Invisalign, made by Align Technology.
The product costs patients about $5,000 -- roughly the same as metal braces. They're made of clear plastic and designed to be more comfortable than metal braces.
Align sold $123 million of the products last year, most of them to U.S. orthodontists. An estimated 175,000 patients have been treated with Invisalign, up from 80,000 at the end of 2002.
When orthodontists purchase the Invisalign system, they get aligners, software and a team of orthodontists employed by Align who help them predict and model patients' tooth movements.
