Hospital Costs Dip, Raising Profit

Rural chain Province Healthcare's dip in labor costs more than offset a jump in first-quarter bad-debt expenses, which totaled 9.9% of revenue, up from 8.6% a year earlier. Earnings rose 20% to 24 cents a share on revenue that grew 10% to $204.9 million.

Allergan Reports Profit Gains

The maker of wrinkle-smoother Botox and eye-care treatments reported first-quarter earnings of 60 cents a share, up from 54 cents the prior year and a penny ahead of consensus analyst views. Still, Allergan's stock fell in early trading Friday. Sales of the Botox injection rose 22% to $151 million.
