Angel Mehta has seen plenty of executives who don't have a clue.
For instance, one boorish job candidate wouldn't stop talking about his life and career during an interview. Frustrated by this monologue and unable to get a word in, Mehta actually feigned falling asleep by dropping his head to his chest.
The prospect was so self-absorbed that he didn't even notice. He also didn't get asked back for the job.
As a managing director for search firm Sterling-Hoffman, Mehta is charged with recruiting senior managers for software makers. He says a lack of personal maturity is a big barrier to corporate success.
Many large companies, such as Avon Products and Johnson & Johnson, have developed internal programs to measure and improve emotional aptitude.
Researchers have dubbed the concept "emotional IQ." Author Daniel Goleman popularized this idea with his 1995 book, "Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ."
