Biogen Idec Q1 profit rose 66%
The biotech made 40 cents a share ex items, 6 cents over views. Sales rose 24% to $542 mil. Its flagship multiple sclerosis drug Avonex led with a 29% rise in sales to $355 mil. Sales of its cancer drug Rituxan rose 20% to $134 mil. Biogen plans to file for FDA approval of its MS drug Antegren in midyear, ahead of schedule. Shares of Biogen Idec rose 3.5% to 59.
Cigna income up 27%, lifts views
The health insurer beat Q1 views of $1.86 cents a share ex items by 40 cents. Revenue fell 4% to $4.72 bil, also over estimates. The firm, still in a turnaround after 2 years of falling profits, said health care profits rose 53%. It expects to make Q2 net income of $155 mil-$185 mil vs. $151 mil expected and raised its '04 forecast. Shares slipped 0.5% to 64.51.
