No matter what you see in the newspapers about a surgical procedure that will make eyeglasses obsolete, don't throw away your spectacles and your contact lenses just yet.

The procedure, called radial keratotomy (RK), has been around for about 20 years. Even so, it is still classified as experimental by the federal government.

Although it does work to overcome nearsightedness (myopia), there are plenty of requirements which must be met in order for RK to be effective.

First of all, you should be over the age of 21 and have nearsightedness that has stabilized (not significantly changed in the past 18 months). Your nearsightedness should be mild, …
