Company reports advancements in several pipeline programs at AACR meeting.
2004 MAY 6 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- ImClone Systems Inc. (IMCL) presented preclinical data highlighting progress made in the development of several pipeline programs at the 95th annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR).
"This year's pipeline presentations at the AACR annual meeting are especially exciting for us because many of the research programs being discussed are nearing the clinical phase of development," said Daniel S. Lynch, CEO of ImClone Systems. "Utilizing these data and other preclinical research, ImClone Systems is working toward the filing of investigational new drug applications over the next 18 months to advance several programs into clinical trials, including IMC-18F1, IMC-A12, and IMC-1121b."
ImClone Systems researchers presented preclinical data on the company's investigational fully human monoclonal antibody IMC-18F1, which targets the vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-1 (also known as VEGFR-1 or FLT-1). VEGFR-1 is thought to play a role in blood vessel growth and, more recently, ImClone Systems scientists and others have identified expression and function of VEGFR-1 in a number of human cancers including breast carcinoma. IMC-18F1 is a high affinity neutralizing antibody that specifically blocks VEGFR-1 activation and signaling in endothelial and VEGFR-1-expressing tumor cells. Treatment of mice with IMC-18F1 was shown to significantly suppress growth of human breast tumors in several xenograft models.
In related research (abstract number 4334), scientists in the laboratory of Dr. Lee Ellis, professor of surgery and cancer biology, the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, presented data from preclinical studies characterizing the role of VEGFR-1 expression and function in preclinical models of human colon cancer.
