2004 MAY 6 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- The implications of the estrogen receptor beta for patients with breast cancer are outlined in a recent issue of Lancet Oncology.
"Estrogen receptor (ER) a is a well established prognostic marker in breast cancer, and all patients who are ER-alpha positive receive tamoxifen as adjuvant endocrine therapy. Although ER-alpha predicts a favorable disease outcome, the usefulness of ER-beta as a clinical prognostic marker remains to be defined," investigators in England report.
"Here, we outline the history of both ERs and discuss the implications ER-beta has to patients with breast cancer," wrote Valerie Speirs and colleagues at the University of Leeds.
